This was the message the Public Library Directors of California endorsed at a meeting hosted by the California State Library in Sacramento this week. The Public Library Summit provided a chance for library directors to talk about the future of libraries in California. Speakers showed statistics that would surprise many: 68% of adults in California hold library cards, library use is at an all-time high, and, for 75% of Americans, their library is the only available source of free Internet access.
The library is indeed a starting place: a place to start finding a job, becoming a citizen, accessing the internet, learning to use computers or to speak English, learning to read or to love reading, finding friends and a safe place to meet them, finding a way to make a difference in our community.
Thanks to the Public Library Summit for reminding us of this.
